He was appointed sheriff of Snæfellsness County from 19 September 1792. He took over the county in late November of the same year. In 1797 he had a county exchange with Finn Jónsson, sheriff of Borgarfjörður County, and remained there for five years, but then he exchanged counties with Jónas Scheving and was given Skagafjörður County, where he was then sheriff until his death. The yearbooks are an overview of the history of Iceland from around 1262 to the author's time, and are a direct continuation of Sturlung. Espólín also has more genealogical information than any other person from the past, and the genealogy program Espólín is attributed to him. In the winter, he stayed in Viðey with the landfögeta Skúli Magnússon - just as Árni Magnússon had stayed in Skálholt half a century earlier between his trips around the country. Bjarni was appointed the first medical director of Iceland in 1760, but Eggert was responsible for completing the companions' travelogue in Danish in Copenhagen from 1760 to 1766 with a grant from the Árna Fund. The National Library of Scotland's manuscript collection in Edinburgh preserves Eggert's autograph manuscript of the Icelandic Drink Book, dated 1761, which was previously in Finn Magnússon's manuscript collection in Copenhagen (Adv.MS.21.3.15).
