Poems and Stories by Ewa Marcinek. Translated by Helga Soffía Einarsdóttir. \u003cbr\u003ePolished Iceland is a collection of short stories and poems by the Polish writer Ewa Marcinek, who lives in Reykjavík. The book's content is partly autobiographical and describes the reality of a young Polish woman in Reykjavík and her experience of Icelandic society and language. The book, which was originally written in English, has been in the works for some time and various excerpts from it have previously been published, such as in the magazine Ós pressunnar and in the Tímarit Máls og menningar. In addition, the international theater group Reykjavík Ensamble has staged part of the work in the play Ísland Pólerað or Polishing Iceland, which many readers will no doubt be familiar with. The book therefore has a complex reception history and is published here in its entirety for the first time in an Icelandic translation by Helga Soffía Einarsdóttir. In many ways, the creation of the book reflects the meeting of languages and cultures that takes place in the narrative; The book is, as the author himself has pointed out, an immigration story by a Polish writer, written in English and published by an Icelandic publisher.","brand":"Bókin.is","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51120363995464,"sku":"OSC-70381","price":2900.0,"currency_code":"ISK","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0916\/4029\/9848\/files\/84270.jpg?v=1754697898"},{"product_id":"rubaiyat-84268-70379","title":"Rubaiyat #84268","description":"Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. He worked in agriculture and seafaring, was a swimming teacher and a night watchman. Stefán Hörður's first book of poetry, Glugginn snýr í norður (1946), is considered a typical beginner's work, where the author treads well-trodden paths in form and expression and follows in the footsteps of older poets. In another tone, he sings in his second book of poetry, Svartálfadans (1951). The book attracted much attention and admiration, and it was considered that Stefán Hörður emerged as a fully-formed modernist and atomic poet. Nineteen years passed before his next book of poetry, Hliðin á sláttunni (1970). Eleven more years passed until Farvegir (1981) was published. In 1987 he published the poetry book Tengsl (Connections), which was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1989. Two years later, a second book of poetry, Yfir heiðan morgun (Over the Heath Morning), was published. For this book he was the first person to receive the Icelandic Literature Prize. His parents were Magnús Þórarinsson (Hálfdánarsonar bónda á Bakki í Bakkafjörður) and Jórunn Sigríður Thorlacius. Þórarinn and the writer Gunnar Gunnarsson were therefore nephews. Þórarinn moved to Reykjavík with his parents as a child, where his father worked as a barber for a time. He then moved back home to his father's birthplace at Steintún í Bakkafjörður, where his father became a farmer. His father, Magnús, died when Þórarinn was only 7 years old. The main theme of his poetry is the description of nature and love of land and language. He financed his own publication.
