My father's name was Indriði Ásmundsson, a farmer's son from Eyjafjörður, district 1786-1811 (appointed attorney in Sms. in the years 1799 and 1801). Ásmundur was Helgason, brother of Jón Helgason, who was sheriff in eastern Skaptafellsýslu from 1758-1798 (great-grandfather of Rev. Brynjólf in the Vestmannaeyjar), and Björn Helgason, father of farmer Benidikt, who lived for a long time at Hvassafell in Eyjafjörður. My mother's name was Kristín Andrjesdóttir, born from Vopnafjörður, from the family of Rev. Ólafur Guðmundsson (blind), who was a priest at Sauðanes for a long time. I grew up with my parents until I was 15 years old; then in the autumn of 1811 I was taught by the priest Sigfús Finnsson at Þingmúli, and the following winter by the provost Guttorm Pálsson at Hólmur. In the spring of 1814 I lost my father, and I would then have been forced to give up my studies if the provost, Reverend Guttorm, had not continued the kindness he had shown me, to keep me and teach me in the winters for a very small fee, and yet to allow me to stay at home in the summers to help my mother, who was seventy years old, single and destitute. In 1816 I was fortunate enough to be quickly introduced to the then sheriff of Suður-Múlasýsla (later county magistrate) P. Melsteð, when he was on his parliamentary tours; our meeting led to his entrusting me with his writings in the spring of 1817, and raised me from the very beginning, taught me in the winters, promoted my progress in all my education as best he could, applied for alms for me at Bessastaðaskóli, although it did not have the results that could be of use to me, since I received only half the alms, and lacked the means. So when he considered me capable, he sent me to take the examination of Bishop Geir Vídalín, who graduated me on July 16, 1819. After that, I returned to Ketilsstaðir to my benefactor, who in 1820 arranged for me to serve as an assistant priest with Pastor Jón Stefánsson in Vallanes; I then went to attend the priest's ordination in the following winter, and was ordained on Palm Sunday 1821. About a month after I returned from the ordination, Pastor Jón died, and so I served alone. Vallanes parish in the summer of 1822, and until then had a home in Ketilsstaðir. That spring I married my first wife, Þórunn Einarsdóttir, a poor farmer's daughter from Skriðdalur, to whom I had become engaged when I was 18 years old, took my mother, whom I had placed with my half-brother while I was at Ketilsstaðir, and moved to Hólmur in Reyðarfjörður, which I was assigned to serve, while Dr. G. Brynjúlfsson, who had received this bread, was unable to accept it. In this year my mother died. In the autumn of 1822 I received the service of assistant pastor in Dvergastein and Fjarðar parishes, with Salamon Björnsson, and moved to Dvergastein in the spring of 1823. I was assistant pastor there for 10 years. In 1832 I was given the Kolfreyjustaðir parish call, and I moved there in days of 1833 with my wife, who is mentioned before. With her I had 7 children: Anna, born 20 Sept. 1823; Ólavía, 16 Nov. 1825; Pál, 8 Mar. 1827; Kristína, born in July 1828; Sigríður, born in April 1832; Helga, born 19 Oct. 1836 (these 3 last-mentioned all died in the 1st year); Anna Þórunn, born 11 June 1839. In 1848, on 30 January, my first wife died.
