By Lára Magnúsardóttir. \u003cbr\u003eThe aim of the book is to create new premises for research on sources on excommunication and church courts in the period 1275 to 1550, by examining the history of the Icelandic Middle Ages in light of European norms and developments. New light is shed on law and administration in Iceland in the Middle Ages by analyzing them in the context of the history of the general church as an institution rather than seeking explanations for events and political developments within the country. The political structure in Iceland from the enactment of the Book of John and the New Christian Law in the 13th century until the Reformation assumed a dual authority between the church and the king. The author shows that the system of government described by the laws was effective and that the Icelandic church neither enjoyed nor sought independence from the general church. Excommunication, which applied to all violations of church law, therefore has broad implications for research on the position of the institution in the state and its judicial power. Icelandic sources on the use of excommunication from the years 1430-1550 have been preserved better than most and therefore provide a unique insight into the relations between the laity and the church during the period. The study marks a turning point by showing that those who were excommunicated were not outcasts in society and, through a new understanding of the term and a revision of the sources, the medieval church and its judicial system appear in a completely different light than in the negative light of oppression and arbitrariness to which we are accustomed.
