He was a Bjarnarson but early on took the pseudonym Dalaskáld and identified himself with Skagafjarðardalur (Vesturdalur and Austurdalur) where he had his home for most of his life, although he was a frequent traveler, but many people actually think because of his pseudonym that he originated in Dalasýsla.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHe was born at Höskuldsstaðir in Blönduhlíð in Skagafjörður and was the eldest of 13 siblings. He left home soon after his confirmation and worked as a laborer in the Skagafjörður valleys, married and had children, all of whom died young except one, worked for a time on farms but was mostly in travel, traveling all over the country selling his writings and more.
