Printed by Jakob Benediktsson. \u003cbr\u003eGuðmundur was from Bjarg in Miðfjörður. He studied at Hólaskóli and graduated from there with good credentials, according to his own account. He was a deacon at Reynistaður for a short time but soon lost that job, perhaps because of an affair with a certain Arnfríður Jónsdóttir. After that, Guðmundur must have been mostly concerned with preparing boys for school, but in addition, he wrote two essays during those years, one of which was a veiled satire on Bishop Þorlákrák Skúlason and the other was a criticism of the Great Judgment. Because of the latter, Guðmundur was arrested and taken to Copenhagen and held for a while in prison in Bláturn. However, he was soon pardoned by the king but was forbidden to return to his homeland. He then studied at university in Höfn and worked as an archaeologist under the tutelage of Ole Worms. He left behind a Latin Icelandic dictionary, Lexicon Islandicum, which was published in 1683. He then wrote explanations for both Hávamál and Völuspá, and his Latin translation of Völuspá was published in 1673.
