Outside of antiquarianism, he is best known for his harsh criticism of Friedrich Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy.\u003cbr\u003e Wilamowitz studied at the University of Bonn from 1867 to 1869, then continued his studies in Berlin. He received his doctorate there in 1870. In 1876 he became a professor at the University of Greifswald. He moved to Göttingen in 1883 and took up a professorship there. In 1897 he returned to Berlin. By then he had written most of his most popular works and was already considered one of Europe's leading experts on antiquarianism and textual studies.
