Memories of Sigurveig Guðmundsdóttir, a teacher in Hafnarfjörður. Recorded by Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir.
Sigurveig Guðmundsdóttir, like all of her generation, has lived through two eras, and Icelandic society has undergone tremendous changes during her lifetime. In shaping the character of Sigurveig, who was born in Hafnarfjörður in 1909, the most important fact was that as a young girl in the prime of her life, she was plucked from society and put into a tuberculosis asylum, where she fought the white death for many years, including two years of being in a cast. Is there anything to be said for such an existence? Yes, indeed, because when the outside world closes, outside of a single cell, the soul goes on a rampage. The world was a rented place, the manor a realm of dreams.
Another and no less influential factor was Sigurveig's decision to convert to Catholicism at the age of just twenty, and from then on the Catholic Church was her guiding star in life.
