He studied at Laugarvatn School and at the Reykjavík Student Union. He worked in agriculture and fishing, was a swimming instructor and a night watchman. \u003cbr\u003eStefán Hörður's first book of poetry, Glugginn snýr í norður (1946), is considered a typical debut work where the author treads well-trodden paths in form and expression and follows in the footsteps of older poets. In his second book of poetry, Svartálfadans (1951), he writes in a different tone. The book attracted great attention and admiration, and Stefán Hörður was considered to emerge as a fully-fledged modernist and atomic poet. Nineteen years passed before his next book of poetry, Hliðin á sláttunni (1970). Eleven more years passed until Farvegir (1981) was published. In 1987, he published the book of poetry Tengsl (Connections), which was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1989. A second book of poetry was published two years later, Yfir heiðan morgun (Over the Heath Morning). For this book, he was the first person to receive the Icelandic Literature Prize.
