Konráð was a district governor and quite well off, but Jófríður was a refugee after the Móðuharðindin when Konráð took her into his home in 1785 and married her shortly afterwards. He was then in his seventies (b. 1722) and she in her twenties. Konráð died in 1798 and some time later Jófríður remarried his nephew, Gottskálk Egilsson. He was born in 1783 and there was therefore a difference of over 60 years in age between Jófríður's husbands.

Gísli received no education in his childhood except that he was taught to recognize the letters, but he made his own ink and taught himself to write. His mother, who was almost illiterate, kept him working as a weaver, but he enjoyed her great love of poems and stories and could often get away from work by reciting or telling stories. After Gísli's father died, the priest in Glaumbær wanted to take him in and teach him because he saw how easy he was to learn, but his mother and stepfather did not want it.

In the spring of 1804, Gísli first went south to Álftanes to row the sea, as the people of Skagfjorden had done for centuries, and it can be said that his writing career began when he copied stories for himself and others in rural areas, as he was considered to have beautiful handwriting and was very productive. He had inherited a piece of land from his father and had intended to use the proceeds to educate himself, but that did not happen as he had by then got a fiancée and actually had two in the making. One bore him a child in the autumn of 1807, but in the summer he had married the other, Efemía Benediktsdóttir, and had just turned twenty at the time. Their eldest son, Konráð Gíslason, was born in the summer of 1808. They had a total of 9 children.
