The manuscript was mostly written between 1387 and 1394.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe book takes its name from Flatey in Breiðafjörður, from where Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson received it from Jón Finnsson in 1647. The bishop sent the book as a gift to King Frederick III of Denmark in 1656, and it was then one of the most important treasures of the Royal Library until 1971, when the Icelanders received it at the end of the manuscript issue.
