By Helgi Hallgrímsson.
Fljótsdalur is one of the most beautiful and richest regions in Iceland. Snæfell, the highest mountain in the country outside of glaciers, towers majestically over the valley. The large rivers Keldá and Jökulsá flow through the valley in a series of magnificent waterfalls, which have been reduced by the Kárahnjúkar hydroelectric power plant. However, two of the highest waterfalls in the country, Hengifoss and Strútsfoss, remain intact. At the bottom of the valley is Lagarfljót. The region is largely forested, and farm forestry first began in Iceland in the 1970s.

The landscape and natural conditions in the district are described and the inhabitants of each plot of land from around 1800 to the present day and in some places further back in time are mentioned. The history of the district is then traced in several chapters from settlement to the present day. The book is 543 pages long, with nearly 700 illustrations, of which over 400 are in color. The publication was generously supported by Fljótsdalshreppur.

Fljótsdalur is the setting for the main ancient stories of East Iceland. Valþjófsstaður has been one of the country's greatest manors, a church and a vicarage since the 12th century. For many centuries there was a "redwood cabin" and an elegant stave church with a carved door that is named after the place, and now adorns the exhibitions of the National Museum. In Végardur is the center of social life and the Fljótsdalsgrund guesthouse. In Valþjófsstaðafjall is the largest hydroelectric power station in the country, Fljótsdalsstöð.

At Skriðuklaustur is Gunnarshús, which has no equal in Iceland. It was a monastery in the first half of the 16th century, then a sheriff's residence, in the last century the residence of the poet Gunnar, then an experimental farm and finally the Gunnarsstofnun and Snæfellsstofa. At Brekka there was a medical center from the 18th century and a hospital in the first half of the last century. At Egilsstaðir, Óbyggðagetur, a guesthouse at Laugafell and a timber processing plant at Víðivellir ytri have recently been established.

In the 19th century and beyond, the people of Fljótsdal were at the forefront of social life and construction, including installing cables to transport hay from the mountains, building cable cars and suspension bridges, and a "stream ferry", the only one of its kind in Iceland. Various arts have flourished in Fljótsdal, especially music and poetry. The writer Gunnar Gunnarsson was born and raised there in his early years, then was a farmer in Klaustur 1939–1948, and the poet Guttormur J. Guttormsson in Canada had roots there, as well as many other poets and writers.

The author grew up in Fljótsdalur, but has lived in Egilsstaðakaupstaður since 1987 and is now in his eighties. He has previously written the book Lagarfljót – Iceland’s largest waterfall, which was published by Skrudda in 2005, in the same vein as Fljótsdæla, and their subject matter is related in various ways.
