Guttormsson was born at Víðivöllir by the Íslendingafljót River in New Iceland. He attended primary school for three years but was otherwise self-educated. He was a farmer, a musician and played in a brass band. He is often considered the second greatest poet of West Iceland, after Stephan G. Stephansson. He was primarily a poet but also wrote several plays. His first book of poetry, Jón Austfirðingur og níki smakkävðivi, was published in 1909. The main part of the book is a long historical poem about the westward explorer Jón Austfirðing, his journey west, his difficult circumstances and fate. The next book, Bóndadóttir, was published in 1920 and contains some of his best-known poems, such as \"Sandy Bar\" and \"Winnipeg Icelander.\" Then came Gaman og alvara (1930), Hunangsflugur (1944) and Kanadathistil (1958). Guttormur was satirical and radical in his views, but at the same time humorous, even ironic. He often wrote about the life and reality of West Icelanders, but he also had a knack for taking things from his immediate environment and putting them in unexpected contexts. \u003cbr\u003e(www.ruv.is)","brand":"Bókin.is","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51123953631560,"sku":"OSC-47616","price":19500.0,"currency_code":"ISK","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0916\/4029\/9848\/files\/52737.jpg?v=1754772015","url":"https:\/\/www.bokin.is\/en\/products\/gaman-og-alvara-52737-47616","provider":"bokin.is","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
