He became a student at the Lærðir School in 1875 and then began studying theology at Hafnarháskóli but dropped out without completing his degree. After his studies in Copenhagen, he spent several years in Reykjavík, where he worked, among other things, as a teacher and in clerical work. He also edited the newspaper Suðra.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eGestur was one of the pioneers of realism in Iceland and wrote short stories, poems and novels. He was one of the Verðandimen, so called because they published the magazine Verðandi in 1882, where they published works in the spirit of realism.
