Compiled by Jakob Benediktsson.\u003cbr\u003e Gísli Magnússon or Vísi-Gísli (1621 – 1696) was a sheriff and pioneer in agricultural science in Iceland. He was the son of Magnús Björnsson, a lawyer, and Guðrún Gísladóttir. He studied at Hólaskóli and then at the University of Copenhagen. He studied in Holland from 1643-1646 and also spent some time in England.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHe became a sheriff in Múlaþing for part of 1649 and was given Skriðuklaustur where he lived. In 1653 he moved to Hlíðarendi in Fljótshlíð and became sheriff in Rangárþing in 1659. In addition to his official duties, he carried out various scientific activities. At Hlíðarendi, he conducted experiments with grain cultivation and was the first person to cultivate various vegetables in Iceland. It is known that he was interested in trying potato cultivation and in a letter from 1670 he asks his son Björn, who was then studying in Copenhagen, to send him potatoes for sowing, but it is not known that anything came of his potato cultivation experiments. In 1686 he moved to his daughter and son-in-law in Skálholt where he died ten years later from stone fever.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eGísli's wife was Þrúður, daughter of Þorleif, sheriff of Hlíðarend, son of Magnússon the Prud.
