Two winters later, in 1898, Laugarness Hospital began operating. He was then admitted there and was one of the first patients to be transferred there. He remained there until his death. His illness was the so-called flat leprosy. It was not seen to worsen in the last few years. What he suffered most was a digestive disease, not leprosy. This illness worsened more and more until Kristófer was operated on in the autumn of 1923. He then improved somewhat for a while, but then relapsed. Sigurður died in 1925.
