His father, Benedikt Sveinsson, was a well-known politician and businessman, and Einar's mother, Katrín Einarsdóttir, was a well-off and eloquent woman. Einar himself said that it was from her that he got his gift for poetry. Einar attended the Reykjavík School of Law and graduated in 1884.
