By Axel Juel.
Axel Juel was the son of captain Hakon Valdemar Juel (1838-1907) and Nathalia Sophie Christensen (1849-1935). He took the studentexamen from the Lyceum (Nørrebros Latin- and Realskole) in 1901 and the philosophical exam from Copenhagen University in 1902. He then studied Latin and French, as well as law, but abandoned his studies to try to become an actor. This did not work and he was employed as an assistant at the Marineministeriet in 1905 and became a full-time official in 1916. He then became expedition secretary and archivist in 1919 and was the acting head of the ministry's secretariat from 1920 until he was royally appointed to the position in 1923. He held this position until 1943. He married in 1925 with Cand. phil. Anna Louise Rigmor Blume.

Juel began to write poems during his study years and had his first poem published in Tidsskrift for Aandskultur in 1903. He debuted in book form with the poetry collection De første Blomster 1909 and together with the sequel Frimodige Sange (1913) they consist of several love poems as well as descriptions of nature moods. In the collection of poems Vandringsmanden singer (1915) the wanderer's freedom and philosophical reflections are depicted, and in Bogen om Grete (1920) and Rosa (1923) he describes unfortunate love relationships. De kongelige Hjerter (1921) is considered to be a turning point in his writing, when he here transitioned to greater depth and intimacy. Juel's religiosity is also expressed in the poetry collections Langs veijene (1924) and I de dybe Skove (1941). He also wrote several poems dedicated to special occasions, such as Dannebrogen's 700th anniversary (1919) and the 800th anniversary of Absalon's birth (1928). He has also written patriotic songs, of which Flaget (1915) is the most famous, and translated Roman lyrics into Danish.
