Poem by Kormák Ögmundarson.
Kormákur Ögmundarson was an Icelandic poet in the mid-10th century, the son of Ögmundur Kormáksson of Mel in Miðfjörður and Dalla Önundardóttir. Kormákurs saga is about him, which is considered one of the older Icelandic sagas, but he is also mentioned in Grettir saga, Egils saga and Landnámabók. He is described in Kormákurs saga as follows: "He was black-haired and wavy-haired, fair-skinned and somewhat like his mother, tall and strong, a man of impetuous temper."

Kormák's saga mainly deals with the love of Kormák and Steingerður Þorkelsdóttir and seems to be largely written around love poems that he wrote to her. Their wedding had been arranged, but due to pressures that a well-known woman named Þórveig had placed on Kormák, it did not come to pass. Steingerður then married Hólmgöng-Bersi and Kormák challenged him to a duel but did not defeat him. Later Steingerður divorced Bersi and then married a man named Þorvaldur Tinteinn. Kormák went to Norway and on a military campaign in Ireland with King Harald Gráfelt, returned home but went abroad a second time, was with Earl Sigurður Hákonarson and then wrote Sigurðardrápa, which is preserved in the Prose Edda. He finally fell in Scotland.

He and Steingerðr met often and the love between them never faded, but they never got together because of Þórveig's pressures. Many of the love poems that Kormák wrote to Steingerðr are considered particularly beautiful. The best known of them is perhaps this poem:

The moon shone brightly.

surf under the light sky

Shaking the shards of glass

The hawk has onions on me.

But that ray is ruling

since Frida's golden ring

the moon's rays and rings

My unnecessary laughter.
