Bjarni's mother was Steinunn, daughter of Bjarni Pálsson, the medical director, and his father was Vigfús Þórarinsson. Vigfús became sheriff of Rangárvallassýsla in 1789 and lived at Hlíðarend in Fljótshlíð, where Bjarni was raised. He studied with private tutors for his matriculation examination, which he completed at the age of 15.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Bjarni then sailed to Copenhagen and graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a law degree when he was twenty, but then worked in the Danish Chancellery for several years. Bjarni is said to have listened to some of the lectures that Henrich Steffens gave in Copenhagen in 1802-1803 on the Romantic movement, and he was fascinated by poets who wrote in its spirit, such as the Danish poet Adam Oehlenschlager and the German poet Friedrich Schiller.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eBjarni returned to Iceland in 1811 and later became a judge in the Supreme Court and also served as a district magistrate and county magistrate in the southern county in shifts from 1814-1815 and again from 1817-1819. He then became a sheriff in Árnessýsla in 1820, but in 1822 he again became a judge in the Supreme Court and lived in Gufunes. After several trials in women's affairs, which he blamed entirely on Magnús Stephensen, he married Hildi, daughter of Bogi Benediktsson from Hrappsey, and they had a number of children.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Bjarni was instrumental in founding the Mountain Road Association in 1831, which aimed to improve transportation in Iceland. Bjarni was appointed county magistrate in the Northern and Eastern District in 1833. He then moved to Möðruvellir in Hörgárdalur and lived there until his death, where he is also buried.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eMany of Bjarni's best-known poems are homeland or nature poems, such as Iceland (Ancient Ísafold), Iceland (You know the land that gives us life), and Winter, but he also wrote well-known love poems and poetry about heritage.
