He was the son of Arngrím the learned and Sigríður Bjarnadóttir. He studied at Hólaskóli and then theology, natural history and geology at the University of Copenhagen under the guidance of Ole Worm. He also studied in Leyden and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. In 1654-56 he was in Norway with Jørgen Bjelke, the shepherd in Trondheim, the brother of Captain Henrik Bjelke, and there he studied medicine and mining research.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In 1658 he received Garði at Álftanes, took over on December 18th and held it until the end of his life.
