The author describes the conditions and lives of people for seven to eight centuries through contemporary sources that are recorded in the form of visits and sermons of priests and bishops who have visited the parishes on the far side of Snæfellsnes over the centuries.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The oldest records date from the 13th century, but they have been preserved in copies from around 1600 and the first half of the 17th century. There have been six church sites at the far end of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and four churches at most, although there are now only two.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The indexes describe the care of the churches, their condition at any given time, the objects and equipment in their possession. Last but not least, the conditions of the public at that time are described and the conditions of priests in poor parishes.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe story features bishops, their entourage, deacons, priests and local people from each parish. The main biographies of many people are mentioned and pictures of about fifty individuals are published, starting with Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson (1605-1675). There are also about fifty color pictures of churches and churches on Snæfellsnes. The oldest of these is probably from the 14th or 15th century, and it is the image of Mary from Laugarbrekk churchyard.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The book Churches Under the Glacier is the first of its kind to be published in the country.
