She studied nursing in Reykjavík but moved to Seattle in 1925, where she studied and worked. Þorbjörg was appointed head nurse at Vífilstaðas Hospital in 1929, and from 1931 she practiced nursing in Reykjavík and Oslo until 1937, when she returned to Seattle. There she completed a master's degree in public health in 1945.
