They never lived together and Ásgrímur was raised by his maternal uncle, Guðmundur Ólafsson, a member of parliament in Ás, and his wife, Sigurlaug Guðmundsdóttir.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In his twenties, Ásgrímur married Ólöf K. Sigurbjörnsdóttir, originally from Dálar, and together they had four children. When they were newly married, the couple rented the land Kötlustaðir in Vatnsdalur and lived there for several years. But in 1936 they founded the new farm Ásbrekka in Vatnsdalur on one-fifth of the land Áss. In the spring of 1946, Ólöf drowned in Vatnsdalsá during a major spring flood. This was a great shock for Ásgrímur and the children.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Some time later, Guðný Guðmundsdóttir, originally from the Westfjords, came to him as a housekeeper with his young son. They married and had many children. They lived in Ásbrekka until 1954, when they sold their property and moved to Akranes. After two years there, they moved back to Ásbrekka and lived there until 1962. Then they moved to Reykjavík, where Ásgrímur worked for a while at the Icelandic Cooperatives Association.
