Trout was the only catch there, but often a good catch. From Rangárvallasýsla came the Landmen and Holtamen, and from the east came men from Skaftártunga. This fishing was a great source of income. The watermen who went on the trips were called watermen. They could take ten days, and each man had one or two horses to carry.\u003cbr\u003e There was once an incident at Fiskivötnar that I will never forget. The reason is easy to understand for those who study stories: \u003cbr\u003eA man from Rangárvallassýsla saw his enemy in a man he did not recognize and who was also fishing for trout in the Vötni. He said to himself: “This man is neither from Rangárvallassýsla nor Skaftafellssýsla.” At that point, Rangæing thought he knew for sure that a thief was coming there. Thieves, of course, had no right to fish in the Vötni and were justly killed. Rangæing's temper grew increasingly heated the longer he watched this man's actions. Finally, he could not control himself and jumped at him in a fit of rage. They immediately began to fight violently. They tumbled around on the ground, kicked up rocks and grass roots, sharpened their horns at each other and blew heavily. But they did not exchange words other than curses and imprecations. Suddenly, Rangæingi managed to run the other over, had locked his hands around the man's neck and was about to finish him off right there. Then the other finally understood how everything was going. And he used the last of his energy to properly explain himself.
