Guðlaugur graduated from the Prestoskólinn in 1887. He was a pastor at Staðarhraun in Hraunhreppur, later Skarðsþingar and then served for a time at Melur on Skarðsströnd but also in Hvalgröfir and Dagverðarnes. He was then a pastor at Stað in Steingrímsfjörður from 1908–1921 and lived at Hrófberg. He was released from his position in 1921 and moved to Reykjavík, where he lived until his death. Guðlaugur's wife was Margrét Jónasdóttir, a pastor at Staðarhraun.
