Einar graduated from the Reykjavík School of Education in 1881 and then went to Copenhagen to study economics at Hafnarháskóli but did not graduate. After his time in Copenhagen, Einar was an editor for a long time, first in Winnipeg, where he was involved in the founding of both Heimskringla and Lögberg, and then in Iceland, where he adopted the family name Kvaran in 1916. He was a great spiritualist, was involved in the founding of the Icelandic Spiritual Research Society and was the first editor of the magazine Morguns. When Einar was in Copenhagen, realism was making its way into the Nordic countries. He was fascinated by the policy and published the magazine Verðandi in 1882 with three of his colleagues, where they published works in the spirit of the new policy. Einar was a prolific author, writing both novels and short stories in a realistic style.

Einar married Gíslín Gísladóttir in 1888.
