Tryggvi lost his mother when he was six years old, and he grew up in Reykjavík and various places in the north of the country. His school education consisted of a six-week preparatory course for confirmation in the winter of 1916. He was a laborer in Árnes in Tungusveit for five years, a farmer in Bakkasel and Fagranes in Öxnadalur, a laborer in Akureyri from 1925 to 1947, and a collector at the Akureyri Electricity Company from 1935 to 1947, but he supported himself through farming all those years. In 1947 he moved with his family to Reykjavík and worked there as a laborer, most of the time at the Reykjavík District Heating Company and as an inspector at district heating construction in Reykjavík from 1962 to 1968. Tryggvi was chairman of the Akureyri City Workers' Union for two years, on the board of the Dagsbrún Workers' Union in Reykjavík for two decades, including vice chairman for seven years and long secretary. He was a member of the Communist Party of Iceland from its founding and of the Socialist Party from its founding, where he sat on its central committee and held various positions of trust.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eTryggvi was awarded the Dagsbrún Medal of Honor for his work in the trade union movement and received a Dagsbrún Honorary Award for his book Poor People. He published two books of poetry in 1967 and 1971, but after he retired from Hitaveita Reykjavíkur he became a prolific writer. His memoirs were published in three volumes, Poor People in 1976, The Struggle for Bread in 1977 and To the South in 1979. Poor People and The Struggle for Bread were both nominated by Iceland for the Nordic Council Literature Prize.
