By Björn Th. Björnsson. Photography by Pjetur Þ. Maack.
The old cemetery on Suðurgata, Hólavallagarður, was opened in 1838 and is currently celebrating its 150th anniversary. In this magnificent book, Bjrön Th. Björnsson traces the history of the garden all the way back to when the parish clerk Lorentz Angel von Krieger began his fight for the burial of Reykjavík residents in a sacred field at Hólavallatún. Here, he vividly tells the story of the many people who rest there, Guðrún Oddsdóttir who became the "watchman" of the new garden, Bishop Steingrímur Jónsson, the poet Sigurður Breiðfjörður, Sveinbjörn Egilsson, the rector and poet, Sigurður Guðmundsson, the painter, the empty house owner Jón "the rich" in Stöðulkot, President Jón Sigurðsson, Steinunn Sveinsdóttir, a woman from Sjöundá, and Þorleif Repp, a linguist, to name a few.
The author then discusses in detail the diverse memorials in Hólavallagarður and their known authors. The development of stonemasonry and tombstone making in this country is traced and it becomes clear that the garden contains unique sources of old craftsmanship. Furthermore, the tombstones often provide clues to the spirit of the times and various characteristics of those who rest beneath them. Björn tells this story with his well-known style and spirit, and draws on numerous tours of the garden in recent years.
Pétur Þ. Maack has decorated the book with numerous photographs of paths and memorials in the park, but there are also a number of older photographs. The book also includes a beautiful overview map of the park that will be of great use to travelers there.
