The broadcast of the work, translated by Jón Eyþórsson, was therefore also its premiere.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The manuscript was smuggled to Iceland and the work was first performed here in April 1943. Such was its popularity that it was repeated in June of the same year, and finally, sections of it were performed in a memorial program for Kaj Munk in January 1944.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \"Niels Ebbesen\" deals with the Danes' struggle against Teutonic knights in the 14th century. The leader of the Germans is Gert, the \"bald count\", a great rascal who is relentless in his lust for power. Many believe that Hitler and no one else is the author's model for this character. \u003cbr\u003eKaj Munk was born in Maribo, Lower Saxony, in 1898. He studied theology and became a priest on Vedersø in Jutland. Munk was not averse to dictatorship in his early life, but the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and especially Hitler's persecution of the Jews opened his eyes and he fought fiercely against the Nazis during the occupation, both in speech and writing. Finally, German executioners murdered him in January 1944.
