The dictionary is intended to cover free Norwegian up to 1370 and Icelandic up to 1540; from that year is Oddur Gottskálksson's New Testament, the first Icelandic printed book to have survived, which is also the oldest work on which the Dictionary of the University of Iceland bases its vocabulary. The year 1370 is chosen as a reference for Norwegian texts because by then Norwegian had changed so much that Icelandic and Norwegian must be considered two separate languages.
