Her parents moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where her father had taken a teaching position. She pursued an education and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1886. In 1890, she was hired as a teacher at the Boston Public School, becoming the first black woman to be hired as a teacher. She taught there until 1917, when she turned to writing. Initially, she wrote mainly for newspapers and magazines aimed at young girls. But she was then hired to write a sequel to the Pollyanna story.
