Hjörtur Pálsson, an Icelander.\u003cbr\u003e Hans Jakob Konrad Wilhelmsson (W:son) Ahlmann, born 14 November 1889 in Karlsborg, died 10 March 1974 in Hägersten, was a Swedish geographer, glaciologist and diplomat.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Hans W:son Ahlmann grew up in a military home in Stockholm. He studied under Professor Gerard De Geer at Stockholm University, and defended his doctoral thesis on Ragundasjön in 1915. In the same year, he became a docent in geography at Stockholm University, in 1920 a docent in geography at Uppsala University, and a professor at Stockholm University in 1929.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHe was a very active field worker, and in the spring of 1931 he led an expedition to Nordaustlandet on Svalbard. In 1934 he returned to Svalbard together with Professor Harald Ulrik Sverdrup, this time to investigate the glaciers on Vestspitsbergen. He investigated Vatnajökull in Iceland in 1936, and led the Swedish-Norwegian glacier investigations in Greenland in the winter of 1939-40. This gave him a good picture of the glaciers around the Norwegian Sea, and he concluded that they were retreating. During the 1940s, Ahlmann became an international authority on the relationship between climate and glacier size[3]. In 1946 he led surveys of the glaciers on Kebnekaise. He was one of the initiators of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic expedition 1949-52, and was the leader of the expedition's Swedish committee.
