After Grím Thomsen.
Grímur Thomsen wrote a rhyme about Búi Andríðsson and Fríður Dofradóttir. It is based on their love story, the story told in chapters 13 and 14 of Kjalnesinga saga. The poem is long, 260 stanzas in total, and deals with the relationship between Búi and Fríður, but Grímur has changed the plot a lot. At the end of the rhyme there is a discussion of Jökul Búason, the son of Fríður and Búi, who is told in chapter 18, but Grímur's story is completely different from what is told in the story. Jökul has become king of Dofrafjall, taken over by his grandfather Dofri, and Búi goes there to visit him. Fríður goes to Iceland and rests his weary bones in a cave in Laugargnípa and protects the country together with Esja, Búi's foster mother. The story is thus very different from what is told in Kjalnesinga saga.
There is another peculiarity about this poem by Grím. He calls it a rhyme, but the style of the poem has nothing to do with rhymes. Grím's poem is a story poem, but not a rhyme in the strict sense of the word, and it is somewhat surprising that he should choose this name. The rhyme schemes are structured so that the stanzas are either four, three or two rhyme lines. In Grím's poem, the stanzas are either six or eight lines. Of course, this is not the main point. Grím's story poem about Búi and Fríð is a very elaborate piece of poetry. Sigurður Nordal says of them: "They are some of the most clever story poems that have ever been written in the Icelandic language, not only because of the individual chapters that tower over (such as the verses about Reykjanesi and the epilogue), but also because of the way the entire story flows with a continuous epic style and expressive flow."
