He graduated in 1913 and studied cooperative studies (sociology) at Hafnarfjörður University in Denmark and Scotland. After that, he studied economics and became a cand. polyt. in Copenhagen in 1919. He then studied banking in Britain and the Nordic countries and was a state and city employee in Höfn for several years. In 1928, Dr. Jón defended his thesis for a doctorate in law at the University of Oslo. The thesis was called: “Grönlands rettsstilling i middelælden”. Two years earlier, in 1926, Jón had become a major merchant, but he soon gave up trading and turned to the project that had been on his mind – researching and collecting sources on the history and legal status of Greenland. Jón is also best known for the many publications he wrote about Iceland's legal claim to Greenland.
