By Steingerði Guðmundsdóttir.

Steingerður Guðmundsdóttir was born in Ísafjörður in 1912, the daughter of Guðmundur Guðmundsson, a school poet. When she was 11 years old, she acted in a play at the Reykjavík Drama Society. The theater immediately fascinated her and she began studying at the Lárus Pálsson School of Drama, an actor, and from there she went to New York at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She also studied ballet and gesture in the United States. During her studies, her interest in the solo form was awakened, and with the solo in her bag, she returned home to Iceland and introduced it to the people. In the spring of 1947, she performed an original solo in Iðnó, and Halldór Laxness wrote a play review about the play, saying, among other things: "I am convinced that the Icelandic theater will be blessed with a good team member in Steingerður Guðmundsdóttir." Conscientiousness, taste, and precision seem to be in her blood, and she has received in her art an education that should be the basis for serious artistic work. No one who saw her play on Friday night need doubt that she has that one percent intelligence against the 99 percent work required to become an artist.”
Steingerður is primarily known as a poet. She has seven books of poetry in total, in addition to the poetry collection Bláin, 2004, which contains a selection of Steingerður's poems. She also wrote several plays in addition to her solos, two of which were published in book form, Rondo and Nocturne. Steingerður worked for a time as a theatre critic, and her reviews were considered very thorough. Not everyone agreed with her writing, as is often the case with theatre reviews. One of the theatres was very upset that Steingerður was denied free tickets to the theatre.

Rondo is Steingerður's first work to be published, but she had previously published poetry in Ganglera, among others.
