Halldóra was the first Icelandic woman to graduate in architecture.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Halldóra was born at Hrafnagil in Eyjafjörður and her parents were Reverend Þorsteinn Briem, a provost in Akranes and minister, and his first wife Valgerðar Lárusdóttir, who died when Halldóra was eleven years old. Halldóra and the Swedish doctor Jan Ek married in 1941 and had five children. Jan died in 1963.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Halldóra graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1935 and studied architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1940. She began working as an architect for the Swedish Cooperative Movement in 1941 and worked there until 1943. She worked independently as an architect for a while, but in 1949 she began working for Svenska rikisbyggen and worked there until 1960 when she began working for the Swedish State Building Authority.
