He studied singing in Copenhagen with opera singer Valdemar Lincke and music theory with August Enna, received a scholarship from the Alþingi and began studying Icelandic folk songs and setting them to music.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eArrangements of Icelandic folk songs and stirring songs to the poets' patriotic poems were an important part of the national awakening of those years, and that mood can be clearly seen in various songs by Sigfús, such as Þú álfu vorrar yngsta land and Rís ðú unga Íslands merki.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Sigfús and Valborg married in 1906 and then settled in Reykjavík.
