First volume. \u003cbr\u003eSkúli was the son of Jón Thoroddsen, a sheriff and poet, and his wife Kristín Ólína Þorvaldsdóttir Sívertsen, daughter of Þorvald Sívertsen, a member of the Althing. His brothers were Þorvaldur Thoroddsen, a geologist and geologist, Þorður Thoroddsen, a district physician, member of the Althing, a town councillor and treasurer at Íslandsbanki, and Sigurður Thoroddsen, a civil engineer and head teacher at the Reykjavík High School.\u003cbr\u003e Skúli graduated from the Lærði School in 1879 and a law degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1884. After returning from Denmark, he was appointed a barrister at the High Court on 1 August 1884. He then became the sheriff of Ísafjörður County and the town bailiff of Ísafjörður for eight years, from 1885 to 1892. He was dismissed from his post in 1892 after the so-called Skúlamál. He was acquitted by the Supreme Court in 1895 and offered the position of sheriff again, which he declined. In the same year, he was therefore granted a pension.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eSkúli sat in the Althingi for Eyfjorden in 1890-1892, for Ísfjörður in 1892-1902 and for North Ísfjörður in 1903-1915. He was then the president of the united parliament from 1909 to 1911. In parliament, he campaigned for, among other things, the expansion of the right to vote and the abolition of residency requirements. He was then appointed to the Interparliamentary Committee in 1907 and fought against the draft. He was also the auditor of the national accounts from 1908-1913.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Skúli managed a trading company in Ísafjörður from 1888 to 1901, which, among other things, sold salted fish to the Mediterranean. He also ran a store in Ísafjörður from 1895 to 1915. He was responsible for the publication of Þjóðviljan from 1886 to 1915, from 1892 as owner and editor.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eSkúli bought Bessastaði in Álftanes in 1899 and was a farmer there from 1901-1908. He ran a printing shop there, in addition to managing his newspaper and the store in Ísafjörður. In 1908 the family moved to Reykjavík, to Vonarstræti 12, and lived there ever since.
