Translated by Gísli Ólafsson.

This is an account of the journey of three Englishmen through Iceland in the summer of 1881. This travelogue was originally published in English in 1882 under the title Summer Travelling in Iceland and was accompanied by the author's English translation of Bandamannasaga, Þórðar's saga Hreðu and Hrafnkels saga Freysgoði. In other respects, the author intended his work as an introductory work for prospective travellers. To this end, various practical instructions were included in an appendix, which is omitted here.
The companions rode from Reykjavík east through the countryside, north over Sprengisandur, west into Vatnsdalur and from there over Stórasandur, Arnarvatnsheiði, Kaldadalur and via Þingvöllur to Reykjavík. The journey took about a month in total. They made almost no stops in Reykjavík. While they were in Þingeyjarsýsla, one of them and an escort ventured to Askja and wrote a short chapter about it in the book.
