Pictures. - III. Advertisements.

Guðmundur Hávarðsson was born in 1861 in the eastern fjords. He went to Norway as a young man and worked as a carriage driver there for a few years. Horse-drawn carriages were almost unknown in Iceland at the time, and Guðmundur learned the trade that would later make him important in Iceland. In 1904, Guðmundur bought a plot of land in Rauðarártún near Reykjavík and built a handsome wooden house there, far from the main settlement. It was the North Pole. The house still stands just above Hlemmur. Guðmundur says about the name of the house - North Pole. "I can therefore find no more appropriate name for it than to call it the "North Pole" and thus compare this construction work of mine to the first expeditions that were made in the first half of the 18th century to reach the North Pole."

In the summer of 1907, King Frederick VIII visited Iceland with a beautiful retinue and there was much splendor in Reykjavík. The king traveled extensively throughout the South and a carriage was purchased to transport him. Such a carriage had never been seen here before. It was now necessary to find a man who could drive such a vehicle and the name of Guðmundur Hávarðsson, who had been a carriage driver in Oslo, came up. He was then hired to drive the king's carriage as a special royal chauffeur and he was dressed in the regalia that was considered appropriate for this responsible position. It was a blue or black sash, silver-buttoned and silver-lined, and a pipe hat. It even happened that some people got confused between him and the king. One farmer in the Mosfellssveit area said he was sure he had seen the king driving his carriage and thought it was very likely.
