He studied at Flensborg School from 1904 to 1906, but then went to Denmark and studied forestry. He was one of four forest rangers who began working for the Icelandic Forest Service around 1910. Sumarliði was a forest ranger in West Iceland until 1914. He settled in Akranes and worked there in cultivation and teaching until 1940, when he moved to Reykjavík and took on the responsibility of overseeing the tree cultivation of the city's cemeteries. He pursued this work with exceptional dedication for 15 years.\u003cbr\u003e Sumarliði was widely read and knowledgeable.
