His parents were Magnús Þórarinsson (Hálfdánarsonar bónda á Bakki í Bakkafjörður) and Jórunn Sigríður Thorlacius. Þórarinn and the writer Gunnar Gunnarsson were therefore nephews. Þórarinn moved to Reykjavík with his parents as a child, where his father worked as a barber for a time. He then moved back to his father's birthplace at Steintún í Bakkafjörður, where his father became a farmer. His father, Magnús, died when Þórarinn was only 7 years old. His mother continued to live with her children, first in Steintún and then in Höfn, Bakkafjörður.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eÞórarinn became very loyal to Steintún and identified with the place. His schooling was not long, because at that time there was only a school bus service in the village. He is said to have spent one winter at a junior high school in Vopnafjörður and one winter at a grammar school in Akureyri. Þórarinn was said to have been very intelligent, studious and bookish, and his self-education had given him a lot. He read a lot throughout his life.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Þórarinn married Sigurbjörg Sigurðardóttir in 1926 and they had 9 children. Three died in childhood and two died in infancy. In addition, their granddaughter, Þórarinn Sveinn Thorlacius, grew up with the couple. Sigurbjörg and Þórarinn lived in Höfn, Bakkafjörður for the first few years, but most of the time in Steintún, or until 1956. Then they sold their property due to Þórarinn's failing health and moved to Reykjavík.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eÞórarinn published three books of poetry, Útfall in 1964, Litir í laufi in 1966 and Undir felhellum in 1970, as well as a sample of selected poems by 48 Nordic authors, which he called an \"attempt at translation\". The main theme of his poetry is the description of nature and love of land and language. He financed his own publication. Þórarinn also worked on the registration of place names on Langanesströnd, as well as the names of rivers and fishing grounds in Bakkafjörður. Þórarinn died on 6 August 1978.
