By Vigfús Sigurðsson Greenlander. With pictures and maps. \u003cbr\u003eVigfús Sigurðsson Grænlandsfari was born in Gilsbakki in Öxarfjörður on July 16, 1875 and died in Reykjavík on May 26, 1950. He was the son of Sigurður Guðmundsson, a farmer in Gilsbakki, and Þóra Bjarnadóttir. Vigfús lost his father at a young age and went to live with his parents. At the age of 16, he became a laborer in Möðrudalur in the mountains and was chosen at a young age to run the postal route between Seyðisfjörður and Grímsstaðir in the mountains, first with Einar Björn, who was the postman in East Iceland, and then after Einar's death by his widow. Vigfús moved to Reykjavík shortly after the turn of the century in 1900 and learned carpentry, married and set up a farm at Brekka in Álftanes, but also worked as a carpenter. In 1912 he went on an expedition to Vatnajökull and in 1912-1913 on an expedition across Greenland with Capt. JP Koch, Alfred Wegener and Lars Larsen. This expedition set off from Akureyri on July 6, 1912. Vigfús wrote the book Um þvert Grænland about this Greenland expedition in 1916. This expedition laid the foundation for glacier research in the Arctic and Icelandic horses were used there for the first time in Arctic expeditions. Vigfús was the first Icelander to cross Greenland.","brand":"Bókin.is","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51124201029960,"sku":"OSC-44664","price":9500.0,"currency_code":"ISK","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0916\/4029\/9848\/files\/49150.jpg?v=1754780076","url":"https:\/\/www.bokin.is\/en\/products\/um-thvert-graenland-me-kapt-j-p-koch-70487-44664","provider":"bokin.is","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
