Her parents were Björn Jónsson, a farmer there, and Vigdís Samúelsdóttir. In 1895 the family moved to Hraun in Keldudalur in Dýrafjörður.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Lilja married Jón Erlendsson, a fisherman, and they started farming in Þingeyri. They lived there for almost thirty years. Then they moved to Reykjavík, where Jón died in 1948. They had eight children, six of whom survived: Ingibjörg, Hreiðar, Úlfljótur, Bjarni, Jóhannes and Gíslína.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Lilja began writing verses and poems at a young age, and her first book was published in 1935 in Ísafjörður. She paid for the publication herself, and due to financial difficulties, the circulation was very limited.
