Kjartan moved to Reykjavík in 1913 and has lived there ever since. In May 1917 he married Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir and they built a house at Baldursgata 22 and have lived there ever since. In his first years in Reykjavík, Kjartan worked most of the jobs that were available, but in 1921 he was hired as a fireman at the Reykjavík Fire Department, working there continuously until he retired due to old age in 1964. In total, Kjartan worked for the Fire Department for 44 years.
