Poem by Sigurður Einarsson. \u003cbr\u003eReverend Sigurður Einarsson of Holt (October 29, 1898 – February 23, 1967) was an Icelandic priest, member of parliament, writer, poet, and prolific translator.\u003cbr\u003e Sigurður was born at Arngeirsstaðir in Fljótshlíð. His parents were Einar Sigurðsson, a farmer in Arngeirsstaðir, originally from Landeyjar, and his wife María, originally from Fljótshlíð. Sigurður grew up with his parents. He worked hard on land and sea in his youth, but then broke into education on his own initiative, taking his matriculation examination outside of school at the Reykjavík High School in the spring of 1922. He went to the Faculty of Theology at the University of Iceland and graduated from there in 1926. The same year he became a priest in Flatey in Breiðafjörður, and held that position for two years. \u003cbr\u003eIn 1928, Reverend Sigurður sailed for postgraduate studies at Hafnarháskóli and stayed abroad for two years. From there, he traveled to Finland, all the way east to Lake Ladoga. After returning home in 1930, Reverend Sigurður was hired as a permanent teacher at the Icelandic Teachers' College and held that position until, after noisy disputes, he became an associate professor of theology at the University of Iceland in 1937. He was also a nationally elected member of parliament for the People's Party from 1934 to 1937. He resigned as associate professor at the University of Iceland in 1944 and spent the next two years as office manager at the Education Office.\u003cbr\u003e In 1946 he moved from the capital and became the parish priest at Holt under the Eyjafjöll mountains. He held this position until his death.
