The woodcuts, numbered 1-39 and one unnumbered at end, were drawn and cut by Greenlanders. Nos. 1-9 deal with the social life and customs of the Eskimos, nos. 10-39 with their legends and folk-lore. The book is the result of an experiment conducted by Hinrich Rink (1819-1893), crown inspector for southern Greenland. Many of the illustrations were done by Aron of Kangeq (Âlut Kangermio, 1822-1869), whose initials appear in the book. Rasmus Berthelsen's (1827-1901) initials also appear in the book.
