Jónas Kristjánsson swore an oath to become a doctor when his mother died, leaving eight children in a turf farm in Svínadalur in 1881. He was 11 years old at the time. His father died a little later after a few hardships, the family was broken up and most of them went to the West. Jónas fought for his education with great determination and graduated as a doctor at the turn of the century. In the latter part of his life, natural medicine occupied Jónas's mind. He wanted to prevent diseases, rather than react when they were out of control. His life's work was completed with the opening of the Health Resort in Hveragerði on his 85th birthday. A unique story of a zealot who fought to die from a better world than he had to deal with as a child.
