At Krók 1971. Glimpses from town life during the 100th anniversary years. By Ágúst Guðmundsson.
This year marks 150 years since settlement began at Malarkrókur between the Gönguskraðrsáróss and where the Sauðáin River flowed into the sea at the shore in 1871. The estuary was below Kirkjutorgið. Therefore, Sauðárkrókur celebrates its 150th anniversary as a settlement in 2021 when this publication is published.
It is safe to say that the anniversary year of 1971 was particularly significant and eventful in the history of the town. For example, in July alone, a grand anniversary celebration was held and the following weekend the UMFÍ National Championship took place. Many people visited the town and old Króksar were prominent at the anniversary celebration, which was a credit to the town. However, this year will be considered most significant for the changes that occurred in the town's business affairs and the town is building its current prosperity on, such as the arrival of the first scuttlefish.
